Owner/Physical Therapist

Experience

Mike graduated from SUNY @ Buffalo over 33 years ago with a dual major in Physical Therapy & Exercise Science. He worked alongside one of the pioneers of sports physical therapy in Miami where numerous professional and other high level athletes were seen. After a move to Ohio Mike became an NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) in 1995 and then a USA Weightlifting Level 1 Sports Performance Coach. Mike and Karen moved closer to their Buffalo roots and families, settling in Rochester in 1995 where he spent 9 years working at University Sports Medicine.

Mike continued pursuing more expertise in sports and orthopedic care, in 2004 obtaining National Board Certification as a Sports Physical Therapy Specialist. Mike moved on in 2005 to open Peak Performance, soon to be joined by his wife, Karen. The company has grown steadily with new providers over the years who are dedicated to be Rochester’s experts in functional biomechanics problem solving and exercise design to serve those needing Physical Therapy.

His expertise was deeply enhanced in 2009 through the 10-month Gray Institute Fellowship in Applied Functional Science (FAFS) with in-depth training on functional biomechanics and “3D” views of not only human movement but also more deeply appreciating the “mind, body, spirit” sides that make up all patients. In 2012 Mike completed the Nike Golf Performance Specialist (NGS) certification, later advanced through the Gray Institute’s Golf Performance Specialist program in 2021. He has also completed the Excellus Spine Pathway program in 2015.

Mike has been “poured into” by so many wise, skilled, and brilliant clinicians and educators throughout his years and loves to “pay it forward” by sharing his knowledge and experiences with other professionals as well. He has presented his own weekend courses on functional biomechanics topics and been an invited presenter for NYS Regional and also State NSCA conferences, other local conferences, and at the National APTA Conference in 2000. Mike has been a guest presenter for Slippery Rock University, Ithaca College, and Nazareth College PT programs over the years. Mike and Karen have taught at the High Peaks Elite Running Camps at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid for many years now.

Mike did part-time sports performance training of high school/college athletes during his “off hours” through his company, Napierala Sports Training, having worked at different times with McQuaid basketball, Mercy Basketball, Paradigm volleyball (with Karen) , and various other local athletes at the Peak Performance facility in East Rochester. One of his greatest treasures was helping train his son,Jordan, for his Alfred State football and lacrosse careers and then semi-pro football play as a wide receiver….as well as his daughter, Mandy, with her Radford University and College of Charleston Div I volleyball years.

Personal Info

“Karen and I are truly blessed to have our four ‘children’ (not so little anymore)….as of 2022 – Henry(30), Jordan(29), Kyle(26), and Mandy(24). We’ve added another ‘daughter’ to our family in Jordan’s wife, Amy…and our first grandchild, little Joelle (‘Joey’) who is a precious, smiley, awesome gift to us old farts. There’s just something special about becoming a grandparent that it’s hard to explain. It reminds me again of that sudden feeling like when your own kids are born of loving someone so strongly that you don’t really even know yet. God gifts parents with this thing inside that just overwhelms you with this desire to care for and love for this little human that you just met. It’s an awesome thing! (But as grandparents we go home and don’t have to necessarily worry about the poopy diaper!)

In my spare time (where the heck is that?) I enjoy hanging out with and vacationing with Karen, having our whole family together, golfing with friends or the boys, gathering with our men’s Bible Study group, and working out. One of the biggest highlights of my year is Hot Rock Basketball Camp in Michigan, helping my friend and mentor, Gary Gray and his family serve their community. The days of coaching the kids in CYO basketball are over. We enjoyed going back to our ‘parent fans’ days by watching Mandy play and win a number of beach volleyball tournaments over the summer and we’re looking forward to watching Jordan compete again on a local semi-pro football team after this ACL reconstruction recovery (yep, even the family are Peak patients sometimes!). On Sundays you can find me ushering at Northridge Church (across from the zoo on St. Paul Blvd.) at 9am service – if you’re looking for a church to call home, come on over!

Motivation

“I’ve been greatly blessed by a number of things in life…including parents who taught us about caring for others, the value of hard work, and integrity. I’ve also been honored and humbled by the many opportunities to learn from some of the most gifted professionals in the PT and Sports Training world over the years who were willing to share their knowledge and skills. Peak Performance gives me an environment to put all those great lessons together with my own personalized touch so that I can be that blessing to others. I’ve been forced into and learned to be humble – I make mistakes every single day but I strive to learn from them. Part of that is driven by a passion to be a Difference Maker…and so often that is doing the extra work, and thinking outside the limited box of our formal PT training to find the underlying causes of someone’s injury or pain, and, to help them through the right exercises back to not just what they used to do but often even beyond where they used to function! Back to Peak Performance! (Ha…couldn’t resist)”

I’ve also had my own share of injuries that were both painful and debilitating but that also left me unable to enjoy the things I loved doing. That sense of loss and frustration, the doubts about trusting your own body, and the determination to get back up and fight again for what you love are things common to so many people who are hurting and injured. “I’m so humbled by the trust our patients put in us, the distances some will drive (Syracuse, St Bonaventure, Buffalo, Pembroke, Wayne, Mt Morris…), and the other PT options they pass by so they can come to see us. So, I take my job with a great sense of responsibility. The reward – it’s hugely gratifying to have someone look you in the eye and give a truly heartfelt ‘Thanks’ or a warm hug, or a sincere handshake for helping them get back to what they love doing.”
